Music player

Beyond being an impressive singer and accomplished songwriter, Lana Spence has become synonymous with the best the Mid-Atlantic music scene has to offer. She was born and raised in Hagerstown, MD, growing up in a talented family where music played a central and unifying role. Her mother, Betty, always had a song to sing as she danced around the house. Her tremendously talented older brother, Donnie helped introduce her to great music, and encouraged her to explore, discover, and develop her own musical tastes and talent.

At a young age Lana started singing in local bands, gigging endlessly in (seemingly) every bar, tavern, carnival, and theater along the East coast. If there was a stage, it’s a safe bet Lana has performed on it, all the while impressing audiences and developing a reputation as one the most dynamic performers to hit the local rock music scene in a long time. With her musical versatility, powerful voice, and soulful singing style comparisons to the legendary Janis Joplin were inevitable. Lana quickly became a favorite amongst listeners throughout the Baltimore-Washington region.

Lana moved to Southern California for a time and was invited to sing with a number of hot blues groups. One such group, Lana and the Leasebreakers, proved very successful and landed a coveted slot as part of the prestigious San Diego Volkswagen Blues Fest. The Leasebreakers became a fixture on San Diego’s radio and television stations and grew to become a favorite opening act for national touring artists performing in the San Diego area. The success of her time with the Leasebreakers lead to the opportunity to perform a handful of gigs with Janis Joplin’s original band, Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Having settled back in the Four-State area, Lana has sung with a host of local favorites including the rock cover bands Thique and Lana Spence & Men of Leisure. Between 2010-2016 Lana lead the hot blues group Moondog Medicine Show, releasing two acclaimed albums of original material, Elixir and Let it Go. The latter enjoying national radio play and garnering favorable reviews in the prestigious American Blues Review and Blues Blast magazines.

After a lifetime honing her unique sound, Lana has recently formed a new showcase for her iconic voice with “The Lana Spence Band,” a seven-piece R&B/funk band featuring a veritable who’s-who of the areas most respected musicians:  Keith Sylvester (bass), Danny Webber (guitar), Chris Jackson (drums), Cam Millar (trombone), Howard Burns (tenor sax), and Adam Hanlin (trumpet).
